Sea level rise may put many in N.J. at risk

New Jersey has 150 cities and towns with 1.5 million people that may be threatened by sea level rise in the long-term, according to Climate Central of Princeton.

Many of them are in Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex and Union counties.

The numbers assume that 23 feet of sea level rise over hundreds of years is locked in if global warming emissions continue to rise through 2100, according to a Climate Central analysis.

Cities and towns would be largely submerged during high tide, according to Climate Central, a nonprofit research and journalism group.

Under a "deep cuts" scenario with sea level rise of 7 feet 5 inches locked in, 68 cities and towns in New Jersey with 349,137 people would be threatened by sea level rise, according to Climate Central.
